On September 14, 2013, the Iowa State Cyclones will break out a new 1920s inspired Nike throwback uniforms when the Cyclones plays host to the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Similar the uniforms worn by Jack Trice, the first African-American player in Cyclone history in 1923. Trice played in only two college football games at Iowa State and died from injuries suffered in a game against the University of Minnesota on October 6, 1923. Iowa State’s football stadium is named in his honor and the Jack Trice Stadium will host the game between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes on September 14th.
Marketing director, Mary Pink, says the uniforms will go all the way back to the 1920′s to perfectly honor one of the most historical moment and person of Iowa State Cyclone history.
“They’ll look like the uniforms from the Jack Trice era…they will be cardinal jerseys with five stripes and a white number. And then they will have gold pants and then striped cardinal and gold socks to complete the uniform,” Pink says
“The legend of Jack Trice is a critical piece of Iowa State football history,” Rhoads said. “His profound impact on our program resonates with our players today. This is a fitting tribute and our current football team is very excited to wear uniforms from that era.”
The 1920′s inspired Nike throwback uniform features a “Gold/Cardinal” vertical stripe within the front of the jersey and includes a newer and more modernized “White” numerals on the front, while “Gold” numerals is utilized on the back of the jersey. The helmets created for the new 1920′s throwback uniforms will be feature “Cardinal” helmet shell with “Grey” facemask and complete with players numbers decals on the side of the helmet for that ultra classic throwback look, instead of the current ISU logo. The Cyclones bottoms out the classic style uniforms with “Gold” colored pants and cardinal-and-gold striped socks.
The only other time that Iowa State wore a throwback uniform was its 2007 to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the school’s Peach Bowl appearance, when the Cyclones defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 15-13.
